Happy Anniversary, Botox!
Botox: The Only “Toxic” Relationship You Need
Even if you’ve never experienced the wonders of neurotoxins, you’re likely familiar with the one that goes by the name, “Botox.” Many of our It’s A Secret Med Spa nurse injectors would tell you that it’s their favorite treatment to administer. Why? Because the results just can’t be beaten! Botulinum toxin, known worldwide as Botox, was first used to treat a disorder of the muscles around the eyes that causes involuntary crossing. Before that, it was a naturally occurring food-born poison that did much more harm than good in the early 1800s. Fun fact, Botox got its name from the Latin root word for sausage, “botulus,” which was the catalyst for the spread of the toxin. Two centuries later, on April 15th, 2002, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration officially cleared Botox for the treatment of moderate to severe wrinkles in 95 countries. Since then, more than 100 million vials of this miracle toxin have been distributed globally. Ironically, it’s the “toxic relationship” that we all want to be in!
So, What’s the Big Deal?
Because Botox effectively limits muscle mobility, the lines caused by the repetitive movements of the face are made less visible over time and with consistent treatments. In fact, Botox is the only FDA approved treatment to be used for wrinkles on the forehead, around the eyes, and between the eyes. Although it now sits among other brands in the audience of neurotoxins, research has shown that Botox still soars in popularity among its neighbors as the 92% preferred brand.
Its ability to “freeze time”, in a sense, and preserve a youthful appearance has made it the number one non-invasive cosmetic procedure in the world. In the year 2000, over 780K Botox injections were delivered. Fast-forward to 2020, and this number jumped to over 4.4MM, an alarming 459% increase! It’s A Secret Med Spa has been a big contributor to this growth. According to Allergan, Botox’s maker, It’s A Secret alone has utilized almost 10K vials since the med spa’s conception in 2015!
Common Misconceptions About Botox
Maybe you’re already a Botox believer, or perhaps you’ve thought about it before and mentioned it in passing to a family member or friend. Regardless of where you’re at, you’ve probably had at least one person warn you against getting it for any number of reasons. One of the most common misconceptions that can cause people to shy away from Botox is the belief that it will completely immobilize the face, making it impossible to show any emotion at all, and causing the person to look like a “lifeless robot.” While it DOES limit muscle mobility in the treated area to an extent, your nurse injector has been trained to measure out and properly place the product so that there is never an overdose or complete paralysis to any area of the face. For example, our It’s A Secret nurse injectors take great care in listening to their patients during the complimentary consultations that they perform prior to any treatment. Like any other cosmetic procedure, Botox can be manipulated, allowing for more or less movement depending on what the consumer’s beauty goals are.
Should You Get Botox?
Over the decades, Botox’s popularity has increased, and according to product projections, its trajectory is a continued upward trend. This is partially due to the growing amount of focus on education about the product. Whereas it used to be considered a treatment for an older crowd of patients who “needed it,” the goal now is to increase awareness of it as a preventive treatment that can help reduce and slow the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as we age.
After the age of 18, the body begins to produce less and less collagen, which is responsible for elasticity and youthful appearance of the skin. Therefore, it is often recommended to start Botox treatment as early as your twenties! Here at It’s A Secret, our most popular treatment areas are the glabellar region (forehead and “frown lines”), outside of the eyes for “crow’s feet,” and around the mouth for “smoker’s lines.”
