What is Kybella?

Kybella is an FDA-approved injection used to treat the area under the chin, permanently destroy fat cells and produce gradual results. Everyone’s chin profile is different, so your provider will tailor the treatment to your specific needs. The number of treatment sessions will vary based on the amount of fat under the chin and your treatment goals.

Kybella is a prescription medicine and is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called “double chin.” The active ingredient in Kybella is synthetic deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, it destroys fat cells, and once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat. This results in a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin, revealing an improved chin profile.

Kybella might be right for you if:

  • You’re bothered by fat under the chin, also known as submental fullness.
  • You feel the condition makes you look older or heavier than you actually are.
  • You don’t want to have surgery.
  • You eat well and exercise, but submental fullness does not go away.

how it works

How long do results last?

When injected into fat under the chin, Kybella causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. After reaching your desired aesthetic, further treatment is not expected.

How many treatments do clients need?

Your specialist will create a tailored treatment plan based on your chin profile. At each treatment, you will be given multiple small injections under your chin. You may receive up to 6 treatment sessions, spaced at least 1 month apart. Many patients experience visible results in 2 to 4 Kybella treatments. 59% of patients received 6 treatments in clinical studies.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY LIKE?

What to expect
after Kybella

After a Kybella appointment, you can expect some mild to moderate swelling and redness at the injection site. These side effects are normal and typically resolve within a few days. Some people may also experience bruising, pain, or tenderness, but these symptoms can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and should resolve within a few days to a week.

It’s important to avoid any activities that can increase blood flow to the treatment area, such as exercise, for the first 24 to 48 hours after the injections. You should also avoid exposing the treated area to heat, such as hot showers or saunas, for at least the first few days after the treatment.

Kybella typically requires multiple treatment sessions, spaced several weeks apart, to achieve the desired results. The number of treatments needed will depend on the amount and location of the fat, as well as your individual goals and needs.

In general, the results of Kybella become gradually more apparent over several weeks to a few months after each treatment, and the improvement can be long-lasting if you maintain a stable weight. If you have any concerns or questions about your recovery after Kybella injections, it’s best to consult with your licensed healthcare provider.
