What is Microneedling?

Microneedling treats fine lines and scars and issues with skin texture, tone and color with fewer side effects and faster recovery times than laser resurfacing treatments. This collagen induction therapy creates hundreds of tiny, invisible micro-injuries in the top layer of skin with fine needles. 

These micro-injuries encourage new skin cells to form by stimulating the body’s natural healing process, resulting in cell turnover, increased blood flow, and collagen and elastin production for smoother skin. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) may be added to treatments to activate additional collagen production.

What Is SkinPen®?

The SkinPen® is a microneedling device designed to help rebuild the skin’s extracellular matrix. With proven results lasting up to 6 months in many patients, the SkinPen® promotes tissue remodeling without scarring. 

This procedure works best on Fitzpatrick skin types II, III and IV, supporting a visual reduction in pore size, redness, stretch marks and acne scars. Noninvasive SkinPen® sessions take only 30 minutes to an hour.

Benefits of Microneedling

Microneedling may soften fine lines and wrinkles and improve skin tone and texture. You can also expect softer, younger-looking skin with fewer signs of aging. The SkinPen® process also helps with hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, acne scars, trauma scars and stretch marks.

We begin by topically numbing the patient’s treatment area to create a comfortable experience. Our skincare professionals attach a sterile tip containing 12 tiny micro-tips to the SkinPen®. Then, we apply sterile saline and select the appropriate treatment pen settings based on the patient’s unique needs. Next, in a single motion, the skincare professional gently presses the SkinPen® against the skin while simultaneously gliding in one direction until they cover the entire treatment area.

Microneedling vs. Other Skin Treatment Options

Chemical Peel

Chemical peels offer good results, but they can make skin peel and shed during the recovery time. Some clients prefer not to peel. One advantage of a chemical peel is that it works on every skin type.

Botox

While microneedling stimulates collagen and elastin for healthy-looking skin, Botox effectively relaxes wrinkles for reduced muscle movement.

Morpheus8

Morpheus8 is an RF microneedling procedure that penetrates deeper into the skin than microneedling alone. Depending on what you expect for ideal results, Morphues8 might be a better option if you want more dramatic change.

Ideal Candidates for Microneedling Treatment

Microneedling is a safe, fast and effective treatment for visible signs of aging, but some people make better candidates for this procedure than others. Those who benefit from this treatment, which stimulates the growth of new cells, include people with:

  • Skin tones between II and IV on the Fitzpatrick scale

  • Acne scarring and hyperpigmentation but no active breakouts

  • Fine lines and wrinkles on the face, neck and chest

These treatments aren’t recommended for specific skin types and conditions.

  • Chronic inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis

  • Fitzpatrick skin types I, V and VI (very light and very dark tones)

  • Open wounds caused by injuries, picking or active acne blemishes

  • Thin skin caused by recent cancer treatment with radiation therapy

  • Skin with a history of easily marking or scarring

The healing time depends on each individual. Some slight swelling and redness/pinkness for two to four days following the procedure.

What to expect after microneedling?

Immediately after treatment, the treated area will appear bright red. On average, redness will disappear within 2-4 days, however, some patients experience complete healing within 24 hours. Skin condition can continue to improve up to 6 months after the treatment.

How many microneedling treatments are recommended?

It is recommended for most patients to receive a series of 2-3 treatments spaced about 6-8 weeks apart. For patients with concerns about deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks or acne scars, it is recommended to receive 6-8 sessions at 6-week intervals.
