Kybella Vs. Sculptra: What’s the Difference?

Injectables Beyond Neurotoxins

When it comes to injectables other than dermal fillers and neurotoxins, the depth of knowledge tends to be slightly shallower for those outside of the aesthetic industry. Although they are effective, other types of injectable treatments were more recently invented and FDA approved, and therefore are not as widely understood or even known about as of today. Two prime examples of newer and effective injectable treatments are Kybella and Sculptra. Just like dermal fillers and neurotoxins, they are injected directly into the skin or muscle, however, they are meant for completely different purposes and to achieve distinctive goals.

The Difference Between Kybella and Sculptra

Beginning with the difference between Kybella and Sculptra, it is important to understand that one is intended for substance loss, while the other is typically used to increase volume.

Kybella was first introduced to the U.S. as an FDA approved treatment for the common “double chin” in June of 2015. Once injected into the fat beneath the chin, Kybella begins destroying fat cells, which eventually results in a decrease in fullness beneath the chin. Once these cells are destroyed, they cannot return unless excess weight is gained, making Kybella a permanent solution. It’s important to note that multiple treatments may be needed, and this will vary from patient to patient depending on the amount of fat needing to be eliminated and the patient’s specific goals. It is typical for swelling to occur post treatment, and for noticeable results to appear within four to six weeks.

In 1999, Sculptra officially hit the scene. It works by injecting PLLA (Poly-l-lactic Acid) directly into the skin. Over time, this substance begins to stimulate collagen, which in turn restores fullness to the treated areas. It was first used to plump the skin where volume loss or fine lines and wrinkles occurred, reducing signs of aging. In more recent years, it has been discovered as a successful tool in the BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift) procedure, restoring volume to areas of skin around the glutes that have lost substance or decreased in shape and size.
